Once you understand the different string types and how tension works, the next step is matching your setup to how you actually play. Over the years, I’ve helped hundreds of players find their ideal combination - here’s how I approach it.
Power Players
If you rely on hitting big, flat shots and want maximum power from your strings:
Recommended Setup:
- String Type: Natural gut or multifilament strings
- Tension: Low-to-medium (45-55 lbs)
Natural gut provides exceptional power and feel, while multifilament offers similar characteristics at a lower price point. The lower tension amplifies the power these strings naturally provide.
Spin Seekers
If you play with heavy topspin and want your strings to help generate even more:
Recommended Setup:
- String Type: Polyester strings or hybrids (poly mains, softer crosses)
- Tension: Low-to-medium (45-55 lbs)
Polyester’s firm response and textured surfaces grip the ball for spin. Despite what some think, lower tensions can actually help with spin because the ball dwells on the strings longer. Many pros have dropped their tensions over the years for this reason.
Control-Oriented Players
If you generate plenty of your own power and prioritise precision and placement:
Recommended Setup:
- String Type: Polyester strings
- Tension: Medium-to-high (55-65 lbs)
Higher tensions with polyester give you a predictable, controlled response. You’ll sacrifice some power, but if you’re already hitting hard, you’ll appreciate the extra precision.
All-Around Players
If you like a bit of everything and don’t want to commit to extremes:
Recommended Setup:
- String Type: Synthetic gut or hybrid setups
- Tension: Medium (50-58 lbs)
Synthetic gut at medium tension is a fantastic starting point. It offers good power, decent control, and won’t break the bank. From here, you can experiment to find what you like.
Quick Reference
| Playing Style | String Type | Tension Range |
|---|---|---|
| Power Player | Natural gut / Multifilament | 45-55 lbs |
| Spin Seeker | Polyester / Hybrid | 45-55 lbs |
| Control Player | Polyester | 55-65 lbs |
| All-Rounder | Synthetic gut / Hybrid | 50-58 lbs |
Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
These are starting points, not rules. I’ve seen players completely transform their game by trying something unexpected. If you’ve always played with one type of string, consider trying something different on your next restring - you might be surprised.
When you bring your racket to me, I’m always happy to chat about what you’re looking for and suggest options. Sometimes a small change makes a big difference.
